SUNNY
Our Dog SUNNY'S Story:

Lisa and Jeff adopted Sunny on October 10, 2000. Our 21 year old cat 'Baby' had just passed a few months earlier and we had decided that we wanted a Maltese and that it would be more meaningful if we rescued one instead of buying one from a breeder; so we contacted the United Maltese Rescue League . When they contacted us about Sunny, and told us the dire situation he was in, our hearts went out to him and we knew we had to act quickly to get him out of the home he was in and save him. When we got to the home Sunny was living in and met him, we knew he was in need of immediate medical attention. He had been with a family that could not afford to take care of him and had been neglected medically. When we first saw him, his hair was completely matted, his eyes were practically sealed shut due to dry eye socket, he was flea infested, and his skin was very pink and had sores from where his hair was pulled tight with knots or from where he had scratched himself open. He smelled terrible due to both ears having severe infections. No medications had been given to him to treat these conditions for a long time. But as miserable as he was, we could see a very sweet dog and even before we met him we had already decided to adopt him.

Sunny spent most of his first day with us at the vet, where he was shaved down, cleaned up and sent home with all kinds of medications. Since then, everything has been pretty much all uphill for Sunny. In December, his right ear canal had to be removed, due to the damage from the chronic infections that had gone untreated. Getting this procedure done, along with finally getting him the proper medications, has completely turned him around and made him more comfortable and feeling normal again. He is so happy and sweet and full of love every single day. His eyes are bright and clear and his coat is very clean and well groomed. He has much more energy and shows us lots of affection and constantly wags his tail to show us how happy he is.

Since his previous owner had fed him a diet of mostly hotdogs, it has been a bit of a challenge to get Sunny on a proper diet. He is getting used to his Science Diet and we cook chicken and rice for him in the evenings. He also loves snacks such as raisins, snausages and frosty paws (doggie ice cream)! It's not a surprise that his favorite word is “treat” and boy does he react to that word--he'll stand up on his hind legs, "tap dance" in the kitchen and chase after us and hop in our laps. Using treats as motivation, we've taught Sunny how to do tricks like "speak", "kiss" and "sit".
It has been extremely satisfying to see such positive changes and we continue to see more positive things every day. He has made Jeff and I very happy and he is the light of our life (or the "sunshine")! It feels like he has been part of our family for years.
Thanks to the Maltese Rescue league, Sunny's life, as well as ours, are so much happier and fulfilled.
